Fire Officer Daryl Oprey (CFOA Lead on Inclusion & Diversity) and Jacquetta Gomes Bodhicarini Upasika Jayasili (Advisor on Interfaith and Multifaith to Fire Officer Daryl Oprey and CFOA E & D Group) attended the EHRC Equalities and Human Rights Commisssion meeting Call for evidence; religion or belief in the workplace and service industry, at the EHRC in London on 5th December.

NIF NATIONAL INTERFAITH WEEK 16-22 November 2014

The Mayor of Kendal Councillor Thomas Clare, joined SLIF South Lakeland Interfaith for a celebration in Kendal Town Hall on Tuesday 18th November. Readings were given by the Mayor and local faith groups. A booklet of readings was prepared by SLIF. Jacquetta Gomes Bodhicarini Upasika Jayasili read on behalf of Faith and Fire.

On Sunday 23rd November NIF was celebrated in a Service at Kendal Unitarian Chapel. Jacquetta Gomes Bodhicarini Upasika Jayasili represented Faith and Fire.

Fire Officer Daryl Oprey (CFOA Lead on Inclusion & Diversity) and AFSA Joint Vice Chair and Jacquetta Gomes Bodhicarini Upasika Jayasili (Advisor on Interfaith and Multifaith to Fire Officer Daryl Oprey and CFOA E & D Group) attended the AFSA Asian Fire Service Association Conference Integrated Community Leadership: Working in Partnership to drive Equality, Inclusion &Participation to inform & Secure Prevention, at The Moat House Hotel, Stoke-on-Trent Staffordshire, England, UK on 13th and 14th November.

Venerable Pidiville Piyatissa and Jacquetta Gomes are Fire Chaplains for ESFRS East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. Venerable Piyatissa was represented by Venerable Galpottayaye Pemananda.

The 2014 Manchester Buddhist Convention was held at Manchester University Chaplaincy on 11th October.

The Convention Session Faith and Fire was led by Jacquetta Gomes Bodhicarini Upasika Jayasili (Secretary, Buddhist Group of Kendal (Theravada)) and (Advisor on Interfaith and Multifaith to Fire Officer Daryl Oprey CFOA Lead on Inclusion & Diversity and CFOA Equality & Diversity Group) and ESFRS East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service Buddhist and Multifaith Chaplain; and Fire Officer Daryl Oprey (CFOA Chief Fire Officers Association Lead on Inclusion & Diversity).

Fire Officer Daryl Oprey Oprey spoke about CFOA and Faith and Fire at the FRSCA Fire & Rescue Service Chaplains’ Association of the United Kingdom and Islands UK Conference at the Fire Service College in Moreton-in-the-Marsh from 9th-11th September 2014. ESFRS East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service Buddhist and Multifaith Chaplain and another ESFRS East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service Chaplain represented ESFRS Chaplaincy.

Venerable Pidiville Piyatissa (born in Sri Lanka) Head of Ketumati Buddhist Vihara Manchester led a retreat for BGKT Buddhist Group of Kendal (Theravada) at Kendal Fire Station community room on 27th July 2014.

(As far as we are aware he led the first retreat led by a Buddhist Monk to take place in an operational ve Fire Station in the UK, at Kendal Fire Station in September 2011.)

Jacquetta Gomes Bodhicarini Upasika Jayasili, in her role as Advisor on Interfaith and Multifaith to Fire Officer Daryl Oprey CFOA (Chief Fire Officers Association) Lead on Equality & Diversity and CFOA Equality and Diversity Group spoke on Faith and Fire, at the Faith and Fire, at the Building a Bridge Through Spiritual Friendship Conference of Buddhist Chaplains from the UK and US, held at Balliol College, Oxford University on 15th and 16th March 2014.

The event provided a unique opportunity to share experience between two different parts of the Buddhist world on how each have started to develop Buddhist Chaplaincy, and on its benefits to both chaplains and to those receiving our support and ministry. The overall aim was to forge a collegial and spiritual relationship between UK and US Buddhist chaplains and chaplain communities.

ESFRS East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service England, UK, appointed 2 Buddhist Fire Chaplains.

Venerable Pidiville Piyatissa Head of Ketumati Buddhist Vihara Manchester became the Buddhist Chaplain and Jacquetta Gomes Bodhicarini Upasika Jayasili became the Buddhist and Multifaith Chaplain.

As far as we are aware, these are the first Sri Lankan Buddhist Monk Buddhist Fire Chaplain and first female/woman Buddhist Fire Chaplain.
